Gross or gold? You can now buy Hawaii Pizza Bitterballen at Albert Heijn
Apparently, it’s not the most hated topping on a pizza. But pineapple on pizza, or Hawaii pizza, still divides humanity into two camps – you’re either for it or against it. Okay, fair enough. But what do you think of Hawaii Pizza Bitterballen? (Yes, just let that sink in for a moment; we had to do the same).
Take the bitterbal: a little piece, no, little ball, of Dutch pride, you might say. These days, they’re conveniently available in all kinds of varieties, so even if you don’t eat meat, there’s plenty to snack on at drinks, including, for example, bitterballen filled with Old Amsterdam. And apparently, you can also replace meat ragout with a veggie version without people noticing.
People even want to eat chocolate bitterballen (we assume, judging by the reactions to the article about them). But this?!
Hawaii pizza bitterbal
Hawaii pizza bitterballen with pieces of pineapple! Why?? Looking for the ingredients list, I don’t find much, just the vague description on the website of manufacturer Dr. Oetker itself: “Bitterballen with a tropical touch! Filled with pineapple, ham and cheesestrings [?]”, that’s it. I can clearly see another vague red filling in the ball, which I think refers to the pizza element? In a bitterbal? With pineapple? So many questions. Incidentally, this is a variation on an earlier ball in the same range, the pizza bitterbal.
Snackspert: ‘it’s really not that bad’
Our snack icon Snackspert naturally had to try these controversial balls. ‘Because I believe in freedom of food expression, I don’t want to exclude these Hawaii balls. And to be honest, they’re simply deliciously disgusting. The pieces of ham remind you of the past, and fortunately the small pieces of pineapple aren’t too overpowering; it’s really not that bad. I’m also happy with the shape and crispiness of these pizza bitterballen. Yes, look, they’re not truly magnificent, but I think they’re really not that bad.’
Now it’s your turn. A box of Hawaii pizza bitterballen costs 4.59 euros – seems a bit much for such madness to us, but you do you, no judgements here!
