Chefs’ pet peeves: Hawaiian toastie (without pineapple) causes quite a stir

Hamburger bacon (1)

Why are so many toasties ordered without cheese? That’s the question you’re left with after reading all the Facebook reactions to the article Fast food orders that drive chefs absolutely crazy . And what’s the deal with those gluten allergies? Fortunately, there are also people who can explain that perfectly…

Completely halal

Maaike furrowed her brows at this order: ‘A halal burger with bacon.’ Wasn’t that turkey bacon? ‘No, I specifically stated that.’

Relatable frustration

Evelien reads a lot of familiar scenarios: ‘Completely modifying a menu because of lactose, after which the guest orders ice cream for dessert without batting an eyelid. Or having a gluten allergy but ordering beer anyway.’ Diagnosis: a pain in the neck.

Casually gluten-free

Fien: ‘A croquette sandwich on gluten-free bread… OK.’

The magic of… pesto

Stefan shares his amazement: ‘When I was doing an internship at hotel school, I had a good one too. I’m allergic to pine nuts, so I’d like carpaccio without pine nuts. But with pesto, because that’s processed. I continue to find it fascinating.’

It happens more often than you’d think

Margo understands how that can happen. ‘Cross-allergy. I have it myself too. I can’t eat apples, but apple pie is fine. The proteins that cause the allergic reaction are destroyed by processing.’ So chefs really can work magic!

There are more

Marga and her sister have exactly the same thing: ‘She can’t eat an ordinary banana, but she can eat fried banana. It’s actually quite strange that heat can change it. And I can’t tolerate pears, but stewed pears are fine!’

They only have themselves to blame

For Daphne, that famous Hawaiian toastie without pineapple makes perfect sense. ‘If there aren’t any normal, edible toasties on the menu, a chef is bringing this on themselves.’ Pieter agrees: ‘If you work somewhere that has Hawaiian toasties on the menu, you have no right to complain in the first place.’ Ruben also doesn’t really consider making a toastie cooking: ‘Do you call yourself a chef when you serve toasties?’ André even misses them: ‘I think there are a lot of chefs who would really love to serve a Hawaiian toastie without pineapple right now…’

No pineapple, but…

If the Hawaiian toastie is king, we’ve now discovered the new emperor. Maaike complains about the order: ‘Royal toastie without banana.’ What?!?
