Don’t Fall for It: This One Cocktail Gives You the Most Horrendous Hangover

I’ve let myself be tempted again, completely by accident. You know when, after a couple of glasses of wine, you think, damn, that’s a good idea. Let’s order it! Yes! The next day, regretting every sip. Ugh. The hangover. There’s one cocktail that’s the biggest villain of the whole bunch: this drink is guaranteed to give you the absolute worst hangover.

So don’t fall for it again and let it pass you by: the Esma. Yeah, it sounds sweet, but it absolutely isn’t. An Espresso Martini is deadly. For most people, like me. The combination of pure vodka and coffee seems fun, but it’ll do you in. Especially because the caffeine means you barely sleep deeply that night. And that makes your hangover ten thousand times worse.

Wide awake and wired

“I want something to wake me up and fuck me up” a supermodel asked a bartender (rumor has it, it was Naomi Campbell). He came up with the now wildly popular Espresso Martini. A ‘smart’ move, because this cocktail does exactly that. Caffeine is a stimulant, while alcohol has a sedative effect. The caffeine in the espresso can make you feel more alert and less drunk than you actually are. This makes it easier to drink more than your body can handle, because you feel like you’re still in control. But in the meantime, you’re fucked up and you’ll stay that way for quite a while…

Sugar makes it even worse

Many versions of the Espresso Martini contain coffee liqueur, such as Kahlúa, which is high in sugar. Sugar combined with alcohol can deliver a double blow to your body. Not only does your blood sugar rise quickly, leading to a sugar crash later on, it also promotes dehydration because your body has to work harder to process both the sugar and the alcohol.

The sugars can make the hangover even worse by boosting your energy and then making you crash, leaving you feeling even weaker and more wrecked than usual. I told you: it’s misery in a glass. Next time, I’m really skipping it. Really.
