On Sunday, September 10, chili lovers should head to the Klokgebouw in Eindhoven. If you’re a true chili pro, you can enter competitions to see who can eat the spiciest food.

Competitions

Take part in the Hottest Hamburger in the Netherlands competition, where, you guessed it, you have to devour an extremely hot hamburger. Participants in the Hot Pepper competition have to eat whole peppers, pure and unadulterated. During the Hot Sauce & Sambal Show Off, you can have your own hot signature sauce tested by a professional jury.

How do you measure heat?

The winner is determined by the Wilbur Scoville scale. The great man invented the Scoville scale in 1912. This scale can be used to measure the heat of peppers. The scale ranges from 0 to 300,000 units. For reference, sambal oelek scores 2,000 on the Scoville scale, while Tabasco is slightly higher at 5,000 units. Jalapeño peppers range between 2,500 and 8,000. Habanero peppers can reach a heat level of 300,000 units on the Scoville scale.

Food

In addition to the competitive element, the festival also has a chill element: delicious food. Wander around De Pittige Markt and eat to your heart’s content. Not all the food is flaming hot, so even if you’re not much of a pepper lover, you’ll find plenty to enjoy here as a foodie.

Dutch Chili Fest takes place on Sunday, September 10, from 12:00 to 20:00 at the Klokgebouw in Eindhoven. Admission is free.
