Eddie’s Food Grievances: Having a Hangover When You’re Not Supposed To

Adeline (nickname: Eddie) loves food, lots of it and often, both at home and out. Usually that goes well, but sometimes it doesn’t. In the series Eddie’s Food Grievances you can read about the latter. This time: a hangover after two drinks.

My alarm goes off at six on a weekday. I once decided that getting up at this ungodly hour would give me more out of the day, so I keep doing it. This hour immediately ensures that you get it into your thick skull not to go on a bender outside the weekend, but there’s something going on with that.
The modest tally
This week, I was in the garden at friends’ place at the end of the afternoon. They have the kind of garden that automatically makes you start drinking. And they always have a well-stocked fridge. I let myself be tempted by two refreshing Coronas. But then it was really, really, really enough. I had to get up again at six the next day to push myself to the limit on my spin bike for half an hour.
I went home and thought that no one had ever become worse off from one sip of limoncello, so I had that as a nightcap. For a midsummer’s day with friends, I thought it was an exceptionally restrained tally. Until I woke up the next morning.
A river of thirst
It was as if I had single-handedly saved the Corona factory from the Covid apocalypse and then put the limoncello bottle to my lips to get over it. I had a headache, I was borderline nauseous, and I was desperately thirsty. Damn it: I actually had a hangover. From three (!) drinks. Three! And if anything makes me angry, it’s that.
Lesson learned
Having a hangover when you were being restrained is so damn unfair. It’s such a pathetic kick in the teeth, making it clear that you behaved yourself with your beer for absolutely no reason. I said no to wonderfully bold wine, because wine gives me a headache quickly. I said no to a limonsecco, because I had to work hard the next day. It was all for nothing, zilch, nada.
A kapsalon for lunch
It’s also often the case that on the days when you could perfectly well fight off a hangover, the hangover doesn’t show up. When you have an endless rainy Sunday ahead of you, and you were already looking forward to Netflix and a kapsalon for lunch (delivered, obviously, because imagine having to move) and suddenly feel like going for a long walk.
For f***’s sake. Lesson learned: if you feel like drinking on a weekday, don’t stop at just two drinks and a sip of limoncello.
