Eddie’s Food Grievances: That Layer of Water at the Bottom of the Fridge
Adeline (nickname: Eddie) loves food, lots of it and often, both at home and out. Usually that goes well, but sometimes it doesn’t. In the series Eddie’s Food Grievances you can read about the latter. This time: that puddle of water at the bottom of the fridge.
Let’s start with a big disclaimer: I know you’re supposed to say refrigerator, but in everyday life I simply call it a fridge. I could put on my fancy girl act here, but that’s not me. And after all, the appliance in question cools things, so I think it’s a perfectly fitting name. Besides, I think many more people Google layers of water in a fridge than refrigerator, so our friends at Google will find us more easily too.
Gross at the bottom
Back to the fridge. It’s important in our household. Sometimes I even stand there looking inside for ten seconds, just to see whether something will spontaneously come out. Which usually doesn’t happen, because I didn’t put anything in there in the first place. You could say the fridge plays a major role in our household. Only recently it has started acting up a bit, in the form of dampness. At the bottom—you know, right down there beneath the vegetable drawers—a puddle forms. And I find that absolutely disgusting, as well as inconvenient.
Dampness
Every time I open or close a vegetable drawer, the puddle starts moving. If you’re not careful, you can easily send a small wave out of your fridge. At first I mopped up the puddle every day, but it’s like mopping with the tap running. As soon as I close the door, the light goes out, and I open it again, the dampness is back.
Cold vegetable broth
Besides being inconvenient, I also find the puddle filthy. Whatever you do, food loses bits and pieces in the fridge. Those loose bits end up in the puddle and float around. So you don’t just have a wet mess at the bottom of your fridge, but a kind of cold vegetable broth.
Small cap
Not long ago, I was influenced about my layer of water. If you had told me this twenty years ago, I would have thought you were crazy. But the influencer explained that there’s a hole at the back of the fridge, and if it gets blocked, that puddle of water forms. Ours had a small cap on it. Problem solved, I thought. I proudly and hopefully told my housemate about this discovery, because I thought there was a chance of a puddle-free fridge. But he wondered where that hole was supposed to lead, since there wasn’t a drain behind the fridge, was there? And now he refuses to remove the little plug from the back wall of the fridge.
