Eddie’s food gripes: why on earth would you want to take part in Dry January?

Adeline (nickname: Eddie) loves food, lots of it and often, both at home and out. Usually that goes well, but sometimes it doesn’t. In the series Eddie’s food gripes you’ll read about the latter. This time: we need to talk about Dry January.

Satirical online news magazine De Speld already put our national sentiment into words; aptly, for once: “Move February up to tomorrow so everyone can just get back to boozing.” Hear hear, because who on earth comes up with the idea of not drinking a drop during what feels like the longest month of the year? I don’t understand anyway why going dry always has to happen immediately in January. As if you’re saying: the year has begun, let’s make things seriously difficult for ourselves straight away.
Longest month of the year
Take the month with the least sunlight, the greatest chance of a winter slump and the deepest hole you can fall into after all the drinks, dinners and festivities, and decide that this is a good moment. Besides, I also think it makes very little sense to choose what feels like the longest month of the year for these kinds of practices.
Of course you should be able to go alcohol-free, I’d even dare say it’s good for you from time to time, but why put yourself under so much pressure? And why all at once? During which moment of temporary insanity was Dry January included? Suddenly I understand that simultaneous grumpiness among humanity, too. Things weren’t exactly great already, but now you can’t even comfort yourself with a plate or glass filled with pleasure.
I simply don’t know of a better way to torture myself.
Tomorrow is February
These dreary days are made for a good glass of red by the fire. After cycling through this drizzly weather, you want to dive into a pizza that hangs over the edges of your plate. It’s a pure crime to deny yourself the things that make January bearable. You know what? Let’s just boycott Dry January; this month will be much cheerier for it. Tomorrow is February.
