End of an era: McDonald’s sauce tubs will disappear next year

Who doesn’t know them, McDonald’s famous fries and nugget sauce tubs? The iconic sauce tubs are an essential part of the McDonald’s experience – they’re the perfect dipping moment. But take note: from next year onwards, these tubs will be a thing of the past.

No, don’t panic! Your favourite nugget sauce and American fries sauce will remain. Now that would be real panic. No, it’s about the tubs themselves. They’re going to disappear. Instead, the sauces will come in so-called sachets: sauce packets, that is.
McDonald’s sauce tubs: no longer allowed due to the SUP law
The change at McDonald’s has everything to do with the SUP legislation, which we have already been dealing with in the Netherlands for a while. If that doesn’t ring a bell: this is the legislation aimed at reducing the amount of single-use plastic. Plastic such as the kind used in McDonald’s sauce tubs is therefore no longer allowed. This type of plastic is called rigid plastic. A McDonald’s spokesperson tells RTL Nieuws: “The sauce packets also contain plastic, but it is a different type of plastic and is still allowed.”
End of an era, then. No more sauce tubs at McDonald’s. I do wonder whether those packets won’t be an enormous mess to deal with. Won’t it all turn into one big sticky mess? We’ll find out next year.
