Everyone hired at Greyston Bakery

In New York, it’s already a hit: Greyston Bakery. Everyone can work at this bakery—the employees’ backgrounds are irrelevant. An incredibly successful social project that offers homeless people and drug addicts a future. The bakery is now also coming to the Netherlands; in 2020, Greyston Bakery will open its second location in Amsterdam.

In The Big Apple, the concept works like a well-oiled machine. The bakery has been a great success there for decades, since 1982.

Don’t apply and still get a job
The bakery factory has what is known as an ‘open’ employment policy, meaning that you will be hired no matter what, regardless of your background. You don’t have to send in your CV, and if you have ever been in trouble with the law for one thing or another, you don’t have to mention it.

In short, anyone who would like to work at the bakery can get a job there. No application procedures, just a waiting list that you are placed on as soon as you sign up. Does someone leave? Then the next person on the waiting list joins the company.

Van der Laan
Amsterdam’s beloved former mayor, Eberhard van der Laan, was instantly enthusiastic when he heard about the project. Partly thanks to his enthusiastic and welcoming attitude (he received the people from Greyston Bakery at a restaurant in the capital), the bakery’s first European location will be in Amsterdam. The exact location is not yet known.
