Everything’s going to be okay: the world’s most delicious garlic sauce will remain available

Things looked grim for the best garlic sauce ever in the history of all time. Supermarket chain Deen is calling it quits, which would also mean the garlic sauce under its own brand would disappear. Fans organised a petition, and successfully so: Albert Heijn is adding the garlic sauce to its range.

Deen Supermarkten has been around for 88 years, and the chain mainly has stores in North Holland. Six months ago, the supermarket announced that it would sell its eighty stores to Albert Heijn, Dekamarkt and Vomar. The first stores will soon close to be converted. Customers wondered: what will happen to our favourite products? They will still be able to find most branded products in the new stores, but Deen’s own-brand products will probably disappear. And it would be an eternal shame if that delicious garlic sauce under the own brand were no longer available.

Three bottles a week
Fans of the sauce even started a petition. Quinten Warner from Purmerend was the frontman of the garlic fans. He goes through three bottles of the garlic sauce in a week because he eats it with pretty much everything. Naturally with Deen’s shoarma, but he also dips his toasted sandwiches in it. Quinten collected more than four thousand signatures. And it had an effect, because Albert Heijn announced that the iconic garlic sauce would remain in its range. Even the label looks the same! That’s good news, including for people who had never heard of Deen: the delicious sauce will soon be on the shelves at their stores too.
And what about the sausages?
The garlic sauce has survived, but other Deen own-brand products will have to wait and see. What will happen to those delicious organic beef sausages, the award-winning shoarma or the chicken carpaccio salad (a bizarre name, because the salad has nothing to do with carpaccio but is very tasty)? We’ll have to wait and see; the first converted stores will open in a few weeks.
