Palm oil-free kruidnoten: finally
While we’re still enjoying the sunshine today, (almost) kruidnoten are already back on supermarket shelves. Early? Absolutely. Because kruidnoten on August 25 is well ahead of time for Pakjesavond. And it fuels the national debate; if there’s one thing that unites the Dutch, it’s our collective outrage when kruidnoten appear in stores (far) too early. But we’re happy about it: palm oil-free kruidnoten in August—about time.
Sunflower oil instead of palm oil
A serious note amid the kruidnoten. Palm oil is in almost everything: chocolate, crisps, shampoo, peanut butter, and yes, kruidnoten too. And because palm oil is cheap and works well, many manufacturers love it. But millions of hectares of rainforest are destroyed as a result. Every year. The Flower Farm uses sunflower oil from Germany and Belgium as a substitute for palm oil.
Where can you buy palm oil-free kruidnoten?
At PLUS, Dekamarkt, and in six Albert Heijn stores across the Netherlands, including AH Stadionplein (Amsterdam), AH Parkwijk (Almere), AH Leiderdorp, and AH Enkhuizen. Look for the black bag with confetti and the words “Long live the rainforest”. That’s the one, and it costs €1.49.
