Food guide: where you want to eat when you’re in Milan

Food guide Milaan

I know: I’m treading on thin ice with this food guide. There is so much delicious food to be found in Milan. Still, I’m taking a gamble, because choice overload is lurking in this city. These are my favourites:

Seafood and pizza

Do you like lobster? Then Settembrini 18 is highly recommended. I still sometimes dream about the pasta with shrimp and fresh lobster. So much pleasure for just twenty euros! The wines on the wine list have been specially selected to complement the dishes on the menu. Ask the super-helpful waiter for suggestions and enjoy. The pizzas here are also delicious: a thin, crispy base, just enough cheese – you know, the way you can only get it in the land of pizza.

Sushi with a twist

When in Milan, eat sushi. Okay, you probably didn’t see that one coming. Still, it’s true. At Yang Sushi & Fusion you’ll find classic sushi prepared just a little differently. Think fresh tuna and burrata millefeuille or uramaki with salmon and toasted almonds. Save some room, because you’ll definitely want the coconut cake with mango and passion fruit.

For those with a sweet tooth

For the true chocolate lovers among us: Cioccolatitaliani (who came up with that name?) is the place to be. Especially for one of the ice creams, which are almost enough to count as a full meal. What do you get? One or two scoops of ice cream in a chocolate cone with chocolate sauce on top. And as a topping: a mini cone filled with melted chocolate, caramel and – yes – chocolate.

More pizza

In Italy, you can never get enough pizza. So go on, just one more. With a view of the enormous cathedral, Obicà serves the most delicious wood-fired pizzas. In Italy, a margherita pizza is a good benchmark for seeing how expensive the restaurant you’re entering is. At Obicà, it costs nine euros. Slightly more expensive than average, but certainly not alarming. Another advantage of Obicà is the mozzarella bar (!) where you can choose from no fewer than ten different varieties. Have you ever eaten smoked mozzarella? Definitely worth trying!

See and be seen

Dress up nicely, because at La Briciola it’s all about seeing and being seen. In fact, there are two restaurants opposite each other: the ‘regular’ restaurant, with a wonderful terrace full of lights, and the seafood restaurant. Want to eat seafood on the terrace? You can, because you can order from either menu. Start with the seafood platter with clams and other types of fish, and finish with panna cotta. In between? The lobster pasta is also highly recommended here.

Risotto for two

The blue-and-white interior immediately tells you that this place is all about seafood. And believe me when I say that everything is delicious at seafood restaurant Isola dei Sapori (‘the island of flavour’). What to choose? Difficult, but okay: the risotto frutti di mare. Share it, because you order it for two people.

Rooftop bar

For the finale, head up into the sky to Terrazza Duomo 21 on Piazza Duomo. To get to the terrace (read: rooftop bar), take the lift to the left of the gallery. You pay fifteen euros to go up; your welcome drink is free, from a Moscow Mule to a Spritz. And then? Dance among young and old with the most beautiful view of the Duomo.
