Food poisoning outbreak in Spain after MasterChef contestants cooked

Here’s an early recommendation: that new Spanish season of MasterChef. It could well become the very first season in history in which no one is ultimately crowned MasterChef. Or perhaps they’ll just start the auditions all over again, because something has gone completely wrong here: during a dinner where the contestants had to cook for 120 people, most of them became seriously ill with food poisoning.

And that while it had the potential to be an incredible dinner. The location was already very special: L’Oceanogràfic in Valencia, in other words, the largest aquarium in Europe.
‘Thank you, MasterChef, for the worst dining experience I’ve ever had in my life’
The theme was therefore not entirely surprisingly seafood. The contestants on MasterChef had to prepare a dinner in teams of two for the aquarium staff, 120 people in total. The menu was Asian fusion, including a Japanese cheesecake with… algae. It was also a mix of Mediterranean dishes and Asian seafood. A daring combination—one they probably won’t be attempting again anytime soon.
Employee Irene went off about the incident on Twitter, because she was one of those affected and even ended up in hospital. ‘I was treated in the emergency department for severe gastroenteritis. They injected Primperan into my butt, a medication to reduce the symptoms. I lost five kilos in three days. Thank you, MasterChef, for the worst dining experience I’ve ever had in my life.’
According to her, around 70 colleagues also became very ill; 44 people were treated for their symptoms. And the contestants? I’m very curious to see whether there will be a deserving winner this year… But this episode is one I, disaster tourist or not, really don’t want to miss.
