Forget Viennetta: This Albert Heijn Ice Cream Cake Is the Christmas Dessert You Want
I wouldn’t call myself a Christmas person (I prefer warmer temperatures), but there is something I absolutely love about the festive season: supermarket specials. That may sound a little sad, but I genuinely think it’s fun to browse the supermarkets and see what they’ve come up with this year to make our Christmas dinners easier (and to earn a little extra themselves, of course).
And in that category, I struck gold at Albert Heijn, because the Champagne sorbet was already a hit, and their new ice cream cake, the Speculoos Log, is delicious too — and, as far as I’m concerned, the ideal Christmas dessert: you don’t have to do anything yourself. It also saves some stress for the Allerhande readers who this year found no dessert on the cover of the Christmas edition of Allerhande (yes, there was quite a fuss about that…)
A Viennetta, but different… And better
I’m probably going to make people angry with this, because I know the Viennetta ice cream cake is sacred to many – who didn’t grow up with it? We could almost call it cultural heritage. But do you know what else is Dutch heritage? Speculaas! And when you combine those two things, you get something delightful, as they discovered in Albert Heijn’s test kitchen.
Because at Albert Heijn you can now buy the Speculoos Log for €9.99. It may sound a little on the expensive side (especially considering that a Viennetta costs less than three euros), but it can make a lot of people happy. It’s big and filling, after all. Yes, in the name of journalism, I saw it as my moral duty to test this one for you.
Speculoos Log: not cheap, but very festive
There’s plenty of speculoos flavour in the log—not too much, but definitely noticeable—and it goes beautifully with the ice cream. The Speculoos Log also looks luxurious, so as far as I’m concerned, you can absolutely get away with serving this as your Christmas dessert.
