Free groceries at Albert Heijn?

Albert Heijn filiaal

It doesn’t get much easier. It does get cheaper, though, if we’re to believe our colleague Irene from Franska. By her own admission, she’s a true Dutchie in the sense that she loves bargains and free products. So you can imagine that she often takes part in loyalty promotions. Her new favourite loyalty promotion is the one from Albert Heijn.

From football stickers and pans to food storage containers and tickets to an amusement park, I fill cards with stamps. The only problem is that I often lose them or forget to ask the cashier for them. So I end up with a bunch of half-full loyalty cards, meaning that lovely suitcase or new knife set passes me by yet again. Now, such a knife set really is a nuisance, but still.

Saving digitally at Albert Heijn

Supermarket chain Albert Heijn also loves loyalty promotions, and they’re handling them a lot more cleverly. At the blue supermarket, they do it digitally. Appie’s latest promotion is called ‘Summer Scratch Cards’, and now I can save up for free groceries as a customer. Super convenient, simply through the Albert Heijn app on my phone.

For every €15 I spend on groceries, I automatically receive a digital scratch card in my app, which appears on the homepage under ‘Mijn Albert Heijn’. I can scratch it straight away and see which products I’m allowed to take home for free. I then put these products in my cart, go to the checkout, scan my loyalty card and my groceries, and redeem the items I’ve won immediately.

So far, I’ve already taken home yoghurt, dishwasher tablets and chewing gum for free. Let’s just hope Máxima doesn’t hear about it (does she have misophonia?)

It doesn’t get much easier. Or cheaper. The promotion runs until and including 18 August—pretty good, right?
