Frikandel vaccines and exploded special ones: there’s a crisis in the frikandel world
The coronavirus has the country in its grip. Bars are closed, star chefs have suddenly become Deliveroo couriers and restaurants are turning en masse into dark kitchens. But what about our favorite snack in this corna era? I took the pulse in my favorite Facebook group, Frikandel Speciaal Geeks.
Corona crisis
And that immediately makes it clear that the coronavirus is also alive and well in the frikandel world. And how! Suddenly people have to make frikandellen themselves, their favorite snack bar is closed or only delivery is available. This is leading to horrifying scenes.
March 15
The Facebook group was busy between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. on March 15. That was the day it was announced that all hospitality venues had to close. It was not yet known that takeaway and delivery would still be possible. Come on! Quickly get one more special (or ten)!
“Quickly to the snack bar to get some frikandellen speciaal”
“Hospitality venues are closing for 3 weeks, from 6:00 p.m. Does that apply to the snack bar too? So 3 weeks without a frikandel. Oh wait, that’s almost here, 10 minutes left. ‘quickly goes to the snack bar’”
“The last one from the snack bar for real now.”
Home fryers
What do you do when your favorite snack bar is closed? Or the line is too long? Or you have to quarantine? Exactly, you make sure you get your frikandel yourself. But that doesn’t always go smoothly.
Panic is spreading among those who have no experience preparing frikandellen themselves.
“How am I supposed to do this ?????? Don’t even have a pan myself but I’m craving a frikandel speciaal”
“Just made a cut in several frikandellen before frying them, for the mayo, onions and curry! After a few minutes of frying, some of them exploded. What is the ideal method and temperature for frying a frikandel with a cut?? It has to look good too, of course!”
Even the dedicated home fryers are running into problems.

“Well, it’s happened…It’s finally sinking in for me too…It really is a crisis! No more frikandellen for sale at the local Albert Heijn. Just the thought of it makes my eye twitch and my hands start shaking”
Delivery isn’t everything either
A bit more hassle than usual, but at least you get something.
“Takeaway is possible at the snack bar. Keep your distance, pay contactlessly and wait outside. But at least you get something…”

Michel, on the other hand, is less easily satisfied.
“Because of Corona, I had to choose a snack bar that delivers……. Just cry over this”
