Fruit allergy? Try these tips

An annoying tingling tongue when you drink a pineapple smoothie. Blisters when eating a juicy apple… Some people really do have a love-hate relationship with fruit. No stress. We have the tips to win the battle with your fruit allergy.

Get rid of the peel
Don’t judge a book by it’s cover doesn’t apply to fruit. The substances you’re allergic to are usually found just beneath the peel. So get rid of it. The peel, that is. And then keep your fingers crossed that the peel was the culprit all along.
Wash strawberries
That you should wash your strawberries first is (hopefully) obvious. But try doing it with warm instead of cold water. This softens the little hairs on the strawberries. And those same hairs are often the reason for an allergic reaction. More good news: there’s also a solution for a tingling tongue when eating pineapple.
Choose a different type of apple
You always eat your apple like a true warrior, right down to the core. The fact that you then spend hours with a tingling tongue and itchy throat is just a minor detail to you. Hopefully, this tip will make your ordeal a thing of the past. Research shows that there are two apple varieties with a minimal chance of causing an allergic reaction: Santana and Elise. The only downside: they’re only available in October and November.
Cook your fruit
For many types of fruit, heating them makes a lot of substances disappear. Lucky us, because these are often the substances that cause an allergic reaction. So bake, boil or steam your fruit. Then you have an instant excuse to have grilled grapefruit for breakfast, a fresh apple pie for lunch and finish the day with a delicious tarte tatin. It isn’t healthy, but at least you’ll be rid of your allergy.
Frozen or canned
Have you cooked and peeled until you’re exhausted, but are you still suffering from your fruit allergy? There’s still hope: people with a fruit allergy can often eat canned fruit or frozen fruit. And it’s usually cheaper too. So it’s a win-win situation.
