Ghost kitchen has been named Food Word of the Year 2021
Every year, a new food word is chosen as Food Word of the Year. Last year, ‘coronakilo’s’ was named Food Word of the Year. In 2019, the choice fell on ‘vleesschaamte’. This year, the word is ‘spookkeuken’. It is the Dutch equivalent of ‘dark kitchen’.
Ghost kitchens are location-less restaurants, or, even better: production kitchens for delivered meals, without seating and without serving staff. They are often found on a remote industrial estate. With the measures stating that restaurants were not allowed to receive guests, but could deliver food, many dark kitchens were added.
According to Foodservice Watcher, the agency that initiated the election, the word captures the spirit of mealtimes in 2021. On the one hand, because of the enormous growth in meal delivery. On the other hand, the word can be used figuratively: as a result of the dramatic lockdowns, many restaurant kitchens were unfortunately ghost kitchens again in 2021.
Schnitzel tourism
Just as in 2020, the list contains many food words that have a direct connection with coronavirus and the lockdowns, such as takeaway Ramadan, culiwalk, fryer run, restaurant feeling, schnitzel tourism, dunch and liner (pronounced: ‘linée’). And what about boerenkoolkoninkrijk, avocadohand, kriebelkroket, aromatrilogie, high sea, swoarma, bi-snacksueel, bitterbalnationalist, pastameesteres, eetleven, smaakspoken and schijnpatat?
The Dutch vocabulary has been enriched enormously again this year.
