Lidl chocolade

Lidl is doing great. Recently, they stole our hearts with their ‘Future Goods’; now they’re launching their new, sustainable chocolate bars.

A gnawing sense of guilt

Chocolate has brought me many wonderful things in my life. Beautiful days became even better for me thanks to chocolate cakes at birthday parties, brownies with vanilla ice cream in cafés and fondue evenings with friends. Chocolate also knew how to cheer me up on sad days, when I sat crying on the sofa à la Bridget Jones with wine, music and chocolate. I owe chocolate many beautiful moments, and the thought that my excessive chocolate bingeing has been very bad for the world is a painful reality.

Fortunately, in recent years you’ve seen more and more Fairtrade chocolate bars appearing on the shelves. The arrival of Tony’s Chocolonely in particular was a more than welcome development for addicts like me, who want to buy a bar without feeling guilty.

Lidl effort, big impact

Lidl hopped on the Fairtrade train with the new Way to Go bars, available in dark chocolate, milk chocolate, salted caramel and coconut & pecan. Besides being incredibly tasty (especially the dark chocolate and salted caramel flavours are hard to put down), the bars are also good for cocoa farmers. The cocoa for Lidl’s bars is sourced from the Fairtrade-certified Kuapa Kokoo cooperative in Ghana. In addition to the usual Fairtrade premium, Lidl pays an extra premium, which serves as additional income for the cocoa farmers, who often still live in poverty. As I said: well done, Lidl!

Friday 13 September is World Chocolate Day, so Lidl’s timing is perfect. Quickly get to the shelves to stock up on the bars (€1.99 each)!
