Half of supermarkets are open on Christmas Day, Aldi and Lidl remain largely closed
Maybe you’re not really into Christmas, or you promised to take care of the food this year and have (shit!) just forgotten that one ingredient. In this and other cases, it’s pretty great if you can still pop to the supermarket. Last year, 40 percent of supermarkets were open on Christmas Day; now that figure is as high as 50 percent.
I’m already dreading it: I have to do the Christmas shopping later. Yes, I could have done it earlier, but because of the current measures (read: opening hours until 8 p.m.), I haven’t managed to get everything in the house in time. I’m expecting it to be extremely busy later, but fortunately, in case of emergency, there’s still a chance tomorrow morning.
Small side note: wouldn’t it have been more sensible to keep the shops open longer דווקא now, in order to spread out the crowds, government?
Also in smaller municipalities
This year, more than 1,700 stores are open on Christmas Day. You’ll find the highest percentage in Amsterdam (89%), followed by The Hague (83%), Rotterdam (76%), Utrecht (71%), and in Eindhoven and Tilburg, (66%) of the stores are open, according to Bob Gross of Openingstijden speaking to the AD. More and more supermarkets are also open in smaller municipalities.
Lidl and Aldi
Almost all Vomar branches are open on Saturday. At Jumbo and Albert Heijn, more than half of the stores are open. Notably, Aldi and Lidl are keeping many stores closed on Christmas Day; at Aldi, 15.7 percent of the stores are open, while at Lidl it’s just over 12 percent.
Boxing Day
Around 80 percent of stores are open on Boxing Day. That’s slightly less than last year, when around 90 percent of the branches were open. This is because Boxing Day falls on a Sunday this year. In several municipalities, shops are required to remain closed on Sundays.
