HEMA sold: all the details about the takeover by the Jumbo family

Dutch retail is getting a major shake-up: HEMA is coming fully under the ownership of the Van Eerd family, known for supermarket chain Jumbo. The family already owned half of the shares through its investment vehicle, but is now also acquiring the other 50 percent from investor Parcom.

Exactly how much this takeover will cost? That remains a mystery—but that it is a strategic move is as certain as can be.
The deal still needs to be approved by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM) and depends on the advice of HEMA’s works council. But if everything goes ahead, HEMA will have one clear owner: the family that made Jumbo big.
What does this mean for HEMA?
Ambitious growth plans were recently presented:
100 stores will be renovated
15 new branches will be added
Growth must also come from Belgium and France
The HEMA name will simply remain
In other words: no ‘JEMA’, no smoked sausage next to Jumbo’s peanut butter—HEMA remains HEMA. But with solid financial backing.
Two quintessentially Dutch brands
HEMA and Jumbo are two quintessentially Dutch brands. Together, they reach millions of consumers—from smoked sausage to smoked sausage (okay, figuratively speaking).
The Van Eerd family invested in HEMA back in 2021 and has seen the chain return to good health in recent years. Revenue rose, profits rose, and customer satisfaction rose too. Win, win, win—in short.
With this full takeover, they can build more strategically on a strong retail brand that goes beyond stores alone: cross-promotions, smart deals, better logistics.
And the employees?
Good news: all 17,000 employees will keep their jobs. They were informed about the takeover immediately on Tuesday. In a world where reorganizations often seem standard, that is quite a relief.
