Hideous product: Albert Heijn’s new vegan kebab sticks

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has already devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his lifetime, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav. This week, he tells you where to find the tastiest frankfurters and is disgusted by Albert Heijn’s new vegan kebab sticks.

Limco frankfurters

Nothing beats a frankfurter in your mouth on a wonderfully hungover Sunday, because even though it isn’t very healthy, better a sausage in your mouth than in your—no, never mind, sorry, I’m digressing. But about these frankfurters: everyone is of course familiar with those from Unox or a supermarket’s own brand, but actually these from Limco are at least just as good (Appie also has excellent ones). They actually snap, are nice and long, and simply taste incredibly good. A minor downside is that I find the casing a little too plastic-like; I’d prefer them to be a bit softer. But hey, if that’s the only issue, a frankfurter in your mouth is still very enjoyable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Vegan kebab stick and vegan plain meatballs
Have you always wanted to know what happens to those dog turds left behind on the street? Well, they’re collected, packaged, and then sold as vegan kebab sticks at Albert Heijn. Yes, I’m exaggerating, of course, but these sticks are truly inedible. What a hideous product. It genuinely tastes so disgusting, as if you have mud in your mouth. That’s the most realistic comparison I can make—just throw them away. ⭐️

Buttttt luckily I also have good news for the supermarket chain, because the vegan plain meatballs are actually very good. No hideous soy aftertaste, but simply very decent, soft meatballs that also feel pleasant in your mouth. They’re not as good as IKEA’s plant-based meatballs yet, but this is a very good runner-up. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ras fries and steakhouse burger from snack bar Verhage
A medium-sized snack chain in the Netherlands (mainly in South Holland, mind you, but also in other provinces) is Verhage, where I last visited years ago. In my memory, the place was pretty good, but lacked the X factor. Now, once again, I decided to order from them in Amersfoort. This time, ras fries with a pikanto and a steakhouse burger, because yes, there’s only time for dinner once a day. For those living south of the rivers who don’t know exactly what ras fries are: they’re fries made from potato powder. They taste slightly different from regular fries; in my opinion, they have more of a mashed-potato quality. Anyway, these from Verhage were not good at all. Limp, cold, and fried for far too short a time. You want to take a bite and use your teeth, and that doesn’t happen here. What a shame. ⭐️⭐️

The pikanto and the steakhouse burger were pleasant, by the way; strangely enough, they were at the right temperature. That says enough about those ras fries, but anyway. The pikanto was perfectly fine, while the steakhouse burger was a tasty, substantial burger generously and deliciously messily topped (in a good way). The bun had been toasted nicely, so thankfully it wasn’t dry. I did find the meat a little disappointing, though: it was slightly too salty and had spent some time in the fridge, which made the texture a bit too firm. But in terms of flavour: perfectly fine. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½
