Hilarious: influencer wants to pay for someone else’s groceries and it goes completely wrong
It’s been a hype on TikTok and social media for quite some time: paying for things for someone else. This could happen at the McDrive, for example, where you pay for the order of the person behind you — and then hope they do the same for the next person. A kind of pay it forward, then. It also happens often at Starbucks, and the employees there have already spoken out about it several times, saying it’s really incredibly annoying for them when this happens, no matter how lovely the gesture is.
Influencers especially love doing this, because hey: if you don’t film it and share it, how can anyone know you’ve done a good deed?
‘No, thank you’
That’s what influencer Milly Goldsmith thought too, so she headed to Sainsbury’s armed with her phone to make a nice TikTok in which she would pay for other people’s groceries as a noble benefactor. You’re guaranteed to go viral then, right? That did indeed happen, but not quite for the reason Milly had hoped.
No one wanted her to pay for their groceries, after all. ‘Sir,’ she addressed a man at the checkout, ‘I’d like to pay for your groceries.’ Milly could already almost see the likes pouring in, until the man responded with a very clear ‘no.’ ‘No, no, no.’ No discussion possible.
Okay, it happens — maybe that man was having a bad day? But the second and third people she offered this to also preferred to decline. ‘I didn’t expect this outcome,’ Milly says. So she donated a few bags of pasta to the food bank instead. Nice too.
