7 of Aldi’s Weirdest Products

A trip to the supermarket is an outing in itself. Especially when you come across the weirdest things. Because how on earth do they come up with them? This time: 7 weird products you can find at Aldi.

Stuffed cabbage rolls in spicy sauce
Aldi stands alone at the top when it comes to ready-made food. One of the showpieces: stuffed cabbage rolls in spicy sauce. If we are to believe the reviews, this is heaven in a can, but when I look at the packaging, I wonder whether this is what you’re served in hell. This may well be the least appealing food photo I have ever seen on a package.

Gingerbread cookie cheese
Pumpkin spice is everywhere. In lattes, gingerbread cookies, tea and even in our espresso martini. Aldi previously came out with pumpkin spice latte cheese. And now they’re taking it one step further with gingerbread cookie cheese. We tested the gingerbread cookie cheese, but it turned out to be a disappointment. It actually tasted like… pumpkin spice latte cheese, from Beemster…

Raspberry custard (but without raspberries)
We know that we’re often being conned at the supermarket. With ginger shots containing just 1% ginger, for example, or whole wheat bread that isn’t actually whole wheat at all. We can add this raspberry custard from Aldi to the list: no raspberry juice, concentrate or anything else resembling raspberries can be found on the ingredients list. Nothing, nada, zilch. Now, the side does say ‘pasteurized custard with raspberry flavor’, from which you might conclude that it is custard with the flavor of raspberries. But the front does say ‘raspberry custard’. And that might make you think it is custard made from raspberries. Misleading consumers or not?

Pork steaks in brown gravy
Honestly: this could easily be the kind of can you accidentally toss into your dog’s food bowl while half-asleep.

Sunny cola-strawberry ice pops
When it comes to ice cream, it is often an either-or situation. Either you feel like a thick Magnum, or you want a Calippo. Either every fiber of your being is crying out for a Cornetto, or you feel it’s time for a Raketje. Ice cream or water ice, in other words. If you’re suffering from total ice cream stress and can’t choose, Aldi has the solution. Ice pops with a strawberry ice cream center, surrounded by cola-flavored water ice. You’ll be quite disappointed if you thought the brown coating was chocolate.

Gingerbread cookie advocaat
Because Sinterklaas is staying in the country for a little while longer, Aldi has yet another gingerbread cookie surprise under the mitre: gingerbread cookie advocaat. ‘A traditional treat with a surprising twist, to enjoy for a long time,’ says the supermarket chain. In Grandma’s shoe this year? Available exclusively at Aldi, while supplies last.

Pastilles in latte macchiato flavor
Want fresh breath? Don’t count on that happening with these pastilles, which happen to be from the Fresh Life brand and come in blue packaging. No, these pastilles taste like latte macchiato and are therefore anything but fresh. Not ideal at all if you’re trying to get rid of your coffee breath.
