Hilarious: man encounters edamame for the first time

edamame

It’s happened to me more than once too: you eat something but have absolutely no idea what it is, let alone how you’re supposed to eat it. But I think it happens more often: I know someone who thought oysters were served on a bed of (a lot of) rice and took a big bite. He soon discovered that the oysters were actually lying on a kilo of salt. A sour (or salty) lesson, but you don’t make that mistake again anytime soon.

Something similar happened to a user in the Facebook group ‘Amsterdam durft te vragen’, who had absolutely no idea what those strange beans alongside his Japanese takeaway dish were. How are you supposed to eat this?!

‘Peel them? That’ll take you an hour!’

According to him, the beans that came with the dish he ordered from a Japanese restaurant in Amsterdam were inedible. Hence his question: what are you supposed to do with them? The beans in question were edamame, or soybeans, and the responses were hilarious.

One user replied: ‘They’re edamame… You have to shell them.’ He wasn’t having any of that. ‘Shell them? That’ll take you an hour and everything will be cold. Why don’t they do that during preparation?’ Honestly: if you’re not familiar with edamame, I don’t think this is such a strange question at all. I just don’t think he’ll be giving soybeans another chance…
