Hospitality workers share their horror stories about tipping
If you’re bored, give the website Reddit a chance. Reddit has caused me many sleepless nights, because it’s simply addictive. Sometimes you even learn something from it, and sometimes it’s just incredibly frustrating. Because people do such weird things! You really realize that when you spend a lot of time on Reddit . Like when hospitality workers share their stories about tipping customers…
The AskReddit community was asked: “Waiters of Reddit, what is the worst tipping story you have?” There were some horror stories among the responses… Read on and try not to throw things.
Horror stories about tips
1. A group found it so ridiculous that they had to wait for their table that they decided to leave just a few cents as a tip—then threw it onto the table and poured BBQ sauce over it. Seriously?
2. When the child of two parents at the table has to throw up, the parents do nothing, while the waitress cleans everything up and even comforts the child. Pretty rude, but as the cherry on top, the mother also asks in the middle of it all whether she can get a refill of her drink now. Their thanks? No tip.
3. Members of a church came in every week to eat together, and every week they left no tip, but notes with Bible verses written on them. Every. Single. Time.
4. A waitress was very happy to receive a 20-dollar tip from one table on her first day. So happy that she immediately showed it to the manager, who pointed out that it was a counterfeit 20-dollar bill—and an obviously, badly forged one at that. He then checked the rest of the money the table had paid with: all counterfeit. And she immediately received an official warning for falling for something so blatant.
5. After serving a large party, this girl received ten cents (TEN CENTS!) as a tip, which had been thrown into a glass filled with ice.
6. And this one came up very often: serving staff who were not allowed to keep their tips themselves, but had to hand everything over to the boss. Well, that’s America for you… They can just do that there.
