Garlic powder is incredibly versatile. That’s why we always have a jar at home. For example, it gives these simple seasoned chicken breasts from the Airfryer more depth thanks to its umami flavor. But did you know how many cloves are needed for just one jar?

The difference between fresh garlic and dried garlic powder is significant. Fresh garlic is spicy and has a strong garlic flavor and aroma. The dried stuff, on the other hand, is sweeter rather than sharp. That’s because as much moisture as possible is removed from the garlic when making garlic powder. In fact, almost all of it, so the cloves can then be ground.

So much garlic in a jar of garlic powder

Keuringsdienst van Waarde calculated that each gram of garlic powder requires between 7 and 9 grams of fresh garlic. A supermarket jar usually contains 50 grams. That means at least 350 grams of fresh garlic is needed, which amounts to no fewer than 200 (!) cloves or 13 bulbs.

Difference in price

If you wanted to make garlic powder yourself, it would cost you a little over 7 euros when buying the bulbs sold in packs of two at the supermarket. A jar from a leading brand costs €3.29. Need garlic powder for a recipe? Just buy a jar. You can use it incredibly often, it saves you money and a mountain of work!
