How to: coken, in other words: cooking with Coca-Cola

Boredom is setting in during corona, and your thoughts start to wander. Why are Doritos triangular? Why are HEMA hot dogs so incredibly delicious? What can you actually cook with cola? Quite a lot, as it turns out.

Wonder drink
Cola, the wonder drink—you name it, what can’t you do with it?! is perhaps the better question. Cola isn’t only used as a thirst quencher or in mixed drinks (with red wine, for example, and yes: it has quite a few fans). The uses of cola are almost endless. You can use it to remove rust, make your lawn greener, neutralize jellyfish stings, remove chewing gum from your hair… But cola also comes in handy in the kitchen.
I hardly ever drink cola anyway (except when I’m extremely hungover), and the thought of using something as an ingredient in the kitchen that can also be used to unclog a toilet strikes me as questionable, to put it mildly. But honestly, the dishes below do sound pretty interesting!
Chicken on a can
Baco chick-on-a-can—who wouldn’t enjoy that? Chicken with a little rum and Coke, how much more summery can you get? You can make it in the oven or on the BBQ. Cola and BBQ are a great combination anyway, because cola also works well in sauces and dressings.
BBQ sauce
BBQing on your balcony or in your garden is possible again on these beautiful days! A good BBQ sauce is key, and according to Coca-Cola, this simple recipe is all you need this summer.
Ingredients:
- 2 very finely chopped onions
- 20 ml Coca-Cola
- 200 g tomato ketchup
- 2 tbsp vinegar
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp chili powder
- A pinch of salt
How to make BBQ sauce with cola
Mix all the ingredients in a pan and bring the mixture to a boil. Then cover the pan with a lid and let the sauce simmer over low heat for about 45 minutes. Don’t forget to check on it and stir the sauce occasionally. Once your sauce is thick and syrupy, your homemade Coca-Cola BBQ sauce is ready. Enjoy!
Salad dressing
When it comes to dressings, there’s no such thing as too crazy. So why not put cola in your dressing?
Ingredients:
- 50 ml Coca-Cola light or Coca-Cola zero sugar
- 1 shallot
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tsp balsamic vinegar
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
How to make dressing with cola
Finely chop the shallot and put it in a small bowl. Add the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, Dijon mustard and Coca-Cola light or Coca-Cola zero sugar. Stir briefly and your dressing is ready.
Fried banana
Okay, admittedly, this is cheating a little. You don’t use Coca-Cola here, but Sprite. And since Sprite is just as unusual to use as a cooking ingredient, it fits perfectly in this list.
Ingredients:
- 120 grams flour
- 200 ml Sprite
- sunflower oil
- pinch of salt
- 2 overripe plantains, preferably with black skin
How to make fried banana with Sprite
Put the flour in a mixing bowl, add the Sprite and stir the mixture into a thick batter. Peel and cut the overripe plantains lengthwise or diagonally into slices 2 cm thick. Heat the sunflower oil in a frying pan. Dip the banana slices in the batter and let the excess batter drip off. Put the bananas straight into the pan and fry until golden brown. Be careful when turning them over. Done? Let the fried bananas rest briefly on a plate lined with paper towel before serving.
