How to make sparkling wine with your SodaStream

The SodaStream has been a permanent fixture on my countertop for ages; I really drink so much sparkling water every day, and this is better for the environment than all those individual bottles, as well as being cheaper. But recently I discovered that you can make much more than just sparkling water. There are cola flavors for the SodaStream, as well as Fanta and IceTea… But that’s not what caught my attention.

No; you can actually just put wine in it too! And the result is — you guessed it — sparkling wine.
Sparkling wine: worth trying
And you make it exactly as you would expect; you fill your SodaStream bottle up to the indicated line with wine, so the amount you would normally fill with water, and then put it in the machine. And voilà: within a minute, you already have your result. Of course, we can’t call it prosecco or champagne, but it’s fun nonetheless.
A few practical tips: it’s best not to set the SodaStream to the highest setting, or, if you have one that you operate manually, not to add too much carbonation. Otherwise, it could overpower the flavor of the wine, and of course you don’t want that. So use the setting for lightly sparkling water.
It works with any wine
White wine sounds like the most obvious choice, but of course you can also try this with rosé — and even with red wine if you dare. Then you get something like Lambrusco, fun, right?
And one quick side note: SodaStream advises against making sparkling wine this way and even warns that your SodaStream could break. But another side note: they have to say this for legal reasons, of course, so they aren’t liable if the machine breaks when you use it for other purposes.
