Espresso

Of course, it all starts with the coffee. For a cappuccino, you make an espresso and top it up with milk and milk foam. To get the strongest espresso, it’s best to use an espresso machine. Tamp the coffee down firmly and don’t wait too long to press the button, otherwise your coffee will burn.

Which milk?

Step two is the milk: it’s best to use full-fat cow’s milk to get that silky layer of foam on your perfect cappuccino. Vegan? Then use oat milk. The ratio for the perfect cappuccino is: 1/3 coffee, 1/3 milk and 1/3 milk foam.

Frothing

Naturally, the best option is to do it yourself with a built-in frother in your espresso machine. Froth the milk until you can no longer hold the metal jug because of the heat. If you don’t have a steam wand, these three appliances are the best alternatives according to the Consumentengids:

1. Philips Senseo

This appliance gets an impressive 8.8 for its ‘outstanding foam’. According to the professionals, it’s still not as good as using a steam wand, but this one came closest. For €60, you can order one from Coolblue.

2. Severin SM 3582

According to the consumer association, this powerhouse comes in second place. It received a score of 8.5. It’s available for €70 from Lidl.

3. Proficook MS 1032

Number three finished just behind number two with an 8.4. This one is also slightly more expensive than the first, at €67. You can get it from Bol.com.

The best buy

According to the Consumentenbond, the Inventum MK350 was the best buy. That’s because of its price-quality ratio. The testers note that it is one of the faster and quieter models. With this appliance, you can also froth 50 ml instead of only larger quantities. It is currently discounted to €39 here.
