Hurry to Lidl: You Can Temporarily Find Complete Bubble Tea Kits There
Bubble Tea, also known as boba tea, has been a hit for I-don’t-know-how-long, both as a flavor sensation and an Instagram sensation. The sweet drink with tapioca pearls (a kind of gummy-like balls) made its way from Taiwan to the rest of the world. There are now plenty of Bubble Tea bars, but making it yourself is just as much fun. Lidl has very handy Bubble Tea drink kits on its shelves for that purpose.
Yes, here we go again with another call to action: hurry to Lidl. The kits are currently available in stores during the Japanese weeks. We can hear you thinking, ‘Wait a minute, doesn’t Bubble Tea come from Taiwan? What is it doing at Lidl during Japanese weeks?’ Well, Bubble Tea owes a large part of its popularity to Japan. Thanks to its huge success there, the drink spread throughout the world. We don’t dare say how long the Bubble Tea kits will be available, so if you like Bubble Tea, head to the store soon.
Five flavors
The Bubble Tea kits consist of three components: a sachet of Instant Marbling Boba Syrup, a sachet of boba balls (the tapioca pearls), and paper straws. You get four of each in the box. So you can make four Bubble Teas per box. The instructions are quite simple and are printed on the box. Pour the syrup into a glass, cut open the sachet of boba balls and microwave it for 15 seconds, add 150 milliliters of milk, 80 grams of ice cubes, and the warm balls to the glass with syrup, then mix everything together. That’s it.
There are five different flavors: taro, black tea, matcha, brown sugar, and sweet coffee. I tested the matcha variety.
Taste test
My verdict? I like it! Sweet, but not sickly sweet, with a clear taste of matcha and brown sugar (the boba balls in this matcha kit have a brown sugar flavor). You have to stir it well, otherwise you suddenly end up with sickly sweet gunk—but that’s a standard rule with Bubble Tea anyway. I also found it quick to make. So you just need to have a microwave nearby to heat the boba balls.
Below you can see me (or rather, my hand), in the bright sunshine, with my ice-cold glass of Lidl Bubble Tea. Don’t pay attention to the glass: I didn’t have a cool, Instagrammable takeaway cup to hand.
