What you want to buy during the Japanese weeks at Lidl

We know the Italian weeks, the Belgian weeks and the Spanish weeks, but new at Lidl are the Japanese weeks. The shelves feature miso paste, ramen noodles, mirin sauce and sesame oil, among other things. What do you really want to get? The Japanese chips from Koikeya and mochi in different flavors.

Starting Thursday, July 4, Lidl’s shelves will be filled with typical (and not so typical..) Japanese products. Panko, the ultimate breadcrumb, for coating your shrimp: Japanese. Teriyaki chicken pizza: not so Japanese (but probably: pretty tasty). We’re especially keen on the mochi and spicy Japanese ridged chips.
Mochi
Perhaps not quite as Japanese as we think, either. In Japan, you rarely see those soft, colorful mochi with ice cream inside that you can now buy at Lidl. These silky-soft, colorful mochi, made from a glutinous rice paste, come from Hawaii (where many Japanese people moved long ago) and made their way to Europe via the United States. The outside is sweet and sticky, while the inside is filled with ice cream. At Lidl, you can choose from lime-yuzu, raspberry-lychee and black sesame. A box of 6 mochi costs €3.99.

Koikeya Kara Mucho Hot Chili
A while ago, we wrote about the hottest chips from the supermarket. Honestly: I was pretty much done with those vicious mouth-burners, but when someone recommended Kara Mucho’s chips to me, I gave in anyway. And to be fair, these thick-cut ridged chips are remarkably crunchy and, although generously coated with red chili pepper, are genuinely quite manageable. Sweet and spicy, delicious. Lidl sells them during the Japanese weeks. A 60-gram bag costs €1.99. A non-ridged version is also available.
