IJsie Prima has been named Ice Cream Parlor of the Year
Do you love ice cream—and by that I mean truly delicious, artisanal ice cream? Then you need to go to Callantsoog, because that’s where the winner of the Ice Cream Parlor of the Year competition is located.
With all the crazy ice creams you see in supermarket freezers, from Oreo ice cream cake, Magnum’s Double Gold Caramel Billionaire and Biggetjes and Apekoppen ice cream, you might almost forget that ice cream parlors sell incredibly delicious artisanal ice cream. And it was precisely these ice cream parlors that competed for the trophy of Ice Cream Parlor of the Year 2020/2021, the annual professional competition organized by the Vereniging Ambachtelijk IJscentrum.
Ice Cream Parlor of the Year
Brothers Ties and Kees Baars jumped for joy when they heard that their ice cream parlor had been named Ice Cream Parlor of the Year. Kees Baars Jr.: “It has been an exciting year. Last year, we entered the ice cream season as finalists. And then corona arrived immediately. Naturally, our focus was on keeping the business running as well as possible. We found our way through it.” The announcement of Ice Cream Parlor of the Year remained exciting for the brothers until the very last moment. “It’s a strong field of participants. Every finalist is truly dedicated to their craft. We had to wait a long time for this award ceremony, and at the crucial moment we were extremely nervous. And when it works out: what an incredible feeling!”
Both the professional jury and the food safety inspector were deeply impressed by the family business of brothers Kees and Ties Baars and their parents. The verdict: “A well-organized business. The desire to eat—and make—ice cream here radiates from every corner.”
Third generation
Kees Jr. and Ties are the third generation to run the ice cream parlor in Callantsoog. Together with their parents, Kees Baars and Regina Tichelaar, they run the family business. “Our grandparents and parents also took part in the competitions. We often won prizes, but never before had we taken the big cup home. The one for Ice Cream Parlor of the Year. We’ve managed it now. We’re heading into the Easter holidays with a beautiful trophy on the counter. Absolutely fantastic.”
Also very delicious ice cream
The other five finalists are Het IJscafé in Nunspeet, IJssalon Pinoccio in Heiloo, Intelligentia Taste Rooms in Eindhoven and IJs&Spijs in Haps. So if you’re in the mood for an exceptionally delicious ice cream, you know where to go this summer!
