Tikkies are incredibly convenient. But sometimes they’re also really annoying. And the line between convenient and annoying is a thin one. If you’re not careful, you’ll cross it in no time. Send a Tikkie for less than 3 euros? Here’s what we think.
Tikkie misery
Marcel: “Of course you can send a Tikkie for less than three euros. At least if you’re under sixteen. Or if you earn less than a hundred euros a month. For everyone else: just act normal.”
Steffi: “It depends: if you fronted the money for 10 coffees and are now asking each person to pay you back, I don’t think that’s weird. But if there are two of us and I paid for the coffee, I wouldn’t send a Tikkie for it. I’d say: you treat next time. Then you’ve got a nice reason to meet up again. Oh, and one more thing: complaining about ‘That person had a glass of water while the other had a double latte macchiato with left-stirred oat milk from Madagascar’: NO. Really, no. Just be a little reasonable with each other. Give each other a break, treat each other to something. Nitpicking over 0.25 cents is really annoying.”
Sharon: “As a liberal, I say yes. Because life has become incredibly expensive and—my mother: ‘three euros is more than six guilders!’ As a romantic, I say no. In one-on-one situations: let’s just buy each other a round (although I understand that, with current cappuccino prices, this is also getting out of hand…). So yes, it’s allowed, but if you send me a Tikkie for 25 cents, I’ll think you’re drunk.”
Sabina: “I’d also say: never. Because come on, how stingy are you? But then I started working in a department with about thirty people. When someone has a birthday, a nice lunch is arranged at the office for everyone. So the organizer sends Tikkies for 1.75 per person. Well, that makes sense, right? So I think it’s okay in exceptional cases.”
Delilah: “No, except that it should be possible to send ‘open Tikkies’, with a friendly message saying that even one euro is fine, for example in the parents’ app group for the class or sports team. You can’t look into the wallets of people you happen to be grouped with more or less by chance. Otherwise, among friends, what Steffi says…”
Adeline: “It completely depends on the frequency. Is it a Tikkie for 3 euros and are you paying for more than 3 people? Send it. Do you pay for something for your colleague every day? Send it. But otherwise they’re forbidden.”
Lauretta: “Yes! Well, it does depend on the situation. If someone fronts 2 euros on behalf of 15 people, for example for a shared gift, I definitely think you can send a Tikkie for it. I do that myself, after all. But if I only had to get that amount back from 3 people, I’d find it a bit excessive and therefore prefer not to. If people do send one, I’m fine with that too. To each their own. But treating your fellow human once in a while doesn’t hurt anyone and is also ten times more fun to do!”
