Italian party leader refuses to eat Nutella

On your pancake, waffle, slice of white bread or simply straight from the jar with a spoon. No other spread has as many fans as Nutella. Especially in Italy. And now a minor uproar has broken out. Because, breaking news: Italian party leader Matteo Salvini has said he is going to stop eating Nutella. An Italian who no longer eats Nutella?! What on earth is going on?

Well, the leader of the right-wing Italian party Lega, and Italy’s Minister of the Interior until September, thinks the product is not Italian enough. He says he will eat his bread only with salami and sardines from now on. Quite a transition, it seems to me, from a waffle generously spread with sweet chocolate paste to a savoury sandwich. But even stranger: since when has Nutella not been Italian?

“I found out that the hazelnuts used come from Turkey,” Salvini said at a party gathering in the city of Ravenna. “I would rather use only Italian products. I eat Italian food to support Italian farmers.” Italian media report that Italy does not produce enough hazelnuts to meet the demand of Nutella manufacturer Ferrero. Turkey produces the most hazelnuts in the world. A perfectly logical solution for meeting the demand for Nutella, if you ask me. But Matteo Salvini clearly sees things very differently…
