Jumbo sells Deb’s chicken roulade and the reactions aren’t tender
After Dries’s meatballs, Deb’s chicken roulade is now on the shelves at Jumbo. The reactions? They’re divided. Because is it really just Debby’s seasoning, and why is the price so high? ‘Did those chickens have a gold ring around their leg?’
You can only give love once you love yourself a little too, according to Debby. A profound statement to mull over for a while, perhaps over your coffee. But maybe you’re now wondering who on earth Debby—or Deb to intimates and Jumbo customers—is.

Debby’s full name is Debby van der Zande. Originally from Oldenzaal, Debby gained nationwide fame through the social media for her clothing stores. After selling her shop, she remained relentlessly active on Instagram. This time by sharing her simple and ‘old-fashioned’ recipes, such as Dutch beetroot mash and Eastern-style roulade, all from ‘Deb’s Kökk’n’. And it has taken off spectacularly; her enthusiasm and unmistakable Twente accent have now earned her 265,000 followers.

Smart marketing by Jumbo to partner with Debby, then. But the price has people bouncing off the walls. Prices range between 8 and 10 euros, depending on weight, Jumbo Houtweg Emmen stated on Facebook. The chicken breast roulade costs €15.98 per kilo and the chicken thigh roulade €14.98. ‘Then I’ll slaughter my own chickens—what a price…’, one person comments. Another says: ‘This is ridiculous. Meatballs from Dries, roulade from Debby… who’s next? Gordon’s liverwurst?’ And: ‘Ordinary chicken roulade, put a nice piece of cardboard around it with the name and photo of a famous person, and people really believe these are Deb’s roulades.’
Just Deb’s seasoning
Someone else suggests that it is ‘only Debby van der Zande’s seasoning and Jumbo chicken’. There is plenty of support for this, and people feel cheated. ‘Why not just buy a roulade and add that seasoning yourself?’ The seasoning apparently comes from Verstegen, which Debby likes to cook with. So if you’re near the Grote Markt in Oldenzaal, where butcher van der Zande has a stall, get your Deb chicken there and season it yourself.
Otherwise: head to Jumbo for a chicken roulade that can immediately serve as a conversation piece at the table. Because one thing is certain: Debby gets people talking.
