Klaas (77) has been going to McDonald’s every day for 16 years with the same order

Can you ever get tired of McDonald’s? Not if Klaas has anything to do with it. He has been faithfully going there every day for sixteen years to place the same order. Well, actually, that’s not quite true… Six days a week; on Sundays he gives himself a ‘day off’ from Maccie. Under slight duress, though, because there is no newspaper on Sundays.

Because that newspaper is what he reads every morning at his regular McDonald’s in Enschede. By now, the entire staff knows him, and he is greeted cheerfully every time. He usually arrives around eight in the morning, because that’s when the home-care workers have left.
The same spot every day
Every time, he takes the same little table. Conveniently positioned: in the middle of the restaurant, next to the aisle (handy for his walker) and close to the table with all the newspapers — so he can easily grab one. His regular ritual is different only in winter, because Klaas prefers to sit in the corner then; it is too cold in his usual spot.
But what does this loyal McDonald’s customer order? Is it a Big Mac, the crown jewel of the Golden Arches? Or just a hamburger, or a cheeseburger if Klaas is feeling adventurous? Or a portion of chicken nuggets, of course. Or perhaps he is a vegetarian?
All wrong. Klaas simply orders a cup of coffee every day. Sometimes two. ‘No, I never get food here. It’s not free, you know. I have breakfast at home, with a sandwich topped with chicken breast. I used to always have jam, but I can’t tolerate it very well anymore,’ he says about his eating habits. So no hamburger is involved. I would therefore love to proclaim that the secret to a long and happy life is McDonald’s… But apparently it is only their coffee, because Klaas is delighted every day when he walks into Maccie.
