Klepper & Klepper has launched a new liquorice candy: instant hit
Klepper & Klepper, you know, the makers of the best liquorice ever, has launched a new flavour. And it’s quite revolutionary. We even dare to claim that this is the new hit in liquorice land. The flavour? Coffee!
When Klepper & Klepper launches a new liquorice candy, we’re right there. Because we’re fans of this brand. That doesn’t mean we swallow everything unquestioningly—er, like candy. The last launch, in September 2022, was a pentagonal liquorice candy that left us pretty confused. Because spicy salt with seaweed? Is it tasty? Is it disgusting? A bit of both. Our verdict: disgustingly delicious.
Cheese liquorice, beer liquorice, stroopwafel liquorice…
And now, less than two years later, a new flavour has been launched. And this one immediately has us doing the conga. Because coffee liquorice: what a hit! The new flavour came about after a call from the liquorice brand. When asked what the new flavour should be, they received no fewer than ten thousand submissions.
Cheese liquorice, beer liquorice, stroopwafel liquorice or—the hell in a bag—carpaccio sandwich liquorice: the most varied flavours were suggested. In the end, the Klepper & Klepper team had to work its way through more than 10,000 submitted flavours.

After lots of testing, tasting, deliberating and weighing up the options, they chose liquorice with coffee, submitted by no fewer than 263 people. Kim from Leiden was one of them and stood out because of the argumentation she submitted for the flavour. Huub Klepper: “Kim wrote that, while drinking a cup of coffee, she had skipped the usual biscuit for a change and taken one of our laurel-liquorice candies instead. She was so delighted by the combination of flavours that she decided to submit it. I then tried it myself and, indeed, she was right.”
Real coffee
But coming up with coffee liquorice is one thing; actually making liquorice from it is no easy task. Because it couldn’t contain coffee flavouring, but real coffee. European laws and regulations, however, don’t allow you to simply put coffee into a liquorice candy. (Why not, actually? There are European laws and regulations that seem much stranger to me, such as the ban on building sandcastles in the Italian town of Eraclea—but that’s beside the point.)
At Klepper & Klepper, they found a solution to the coffee-liquorice issue: fresh coffee is now brewed from sustainable coffee beans for the liquorice, then immediately packaged and frozen so it can later be incorporated into the candies. Problem solved. And the result? An absolutely phenomenal candy, shaped like a coffee bean, with an addictive yet subtle coffee flavour.

Klepper & Klepper is available throughout the Netherlands, but not in every shop. On this map of points of sale, you can check whether there is a retailer near you. In Amsterdam, for example, at STACH. Nationwide, at better speciality shops or DA drugstores. At our favourite online supermarket Crisp and at Dropgigant. The price varies, but expect to pay €4.25 for a bag.
