Le Garage in Amsterdam is becoming pancake restaurant Hendrik

Someone once told me: ‘If you want to get rich, you should open a pancake restaurant.’ Anyone who looks at the menu of pancake restaurant Hendrik can only conclude one thing: you can make serious money with pancakes. Prices range from €10.25 (plain with syrup and sugar) to almost €20 for special creations such as the smoked salmon pancake or the kapsalon pancake.

The iconic building that formerly housed the late Joop Braakhekke’s restaurant Le Garage will become Hendrik’s second family restaurant this autumn, bringing its pricey pancakes—and the village-like, rural feel of Vreeland—to the capital.
From Le Garage to Hendrik
Le Garage opened in 1990 and became a hotspot in Amsterdam thanks to Joop Braakhekke. The restaurant was known for its traditional brasserie cuisine with international influences and a lively atmosphere.
The building at Ruysdaelstraat 50 is undergoing major renovations. “By now, everything has been demolished,” Tjerk van der Linden tells hospitality trade magazine Misset Horeca. “The Next Door section has also been opened up, so much more daylight will now enter.” The new restaurant will be a sibling of Hendrik Vreeland, which has been operating since 1967 and is known for its family recipes and homemade pancakes.
Family tradition and authentic recipes
The Van der Linden brothers took over the Vreeland location from the Van Heuven family three and a half years ago. The batter is still made according to the original family recipe, using flour from De Ruiter windmill. In Amsterdam, you can expect the same menu, including shrimp croquettes, satay and salads, alongside pancakes for young and old.
