Life goals: turning one hundred to receive this gift
The Swiss canton of Fribourg has a very special way of celebrating its residents’ hundredth birthdays; they all receive a gift that would make me incredibly happy…
Here in the Netherlands, you receive a letter from the Royal House when you turn one hundred, and in some places the mayor comes to visit, but honestly, I would gladly trade it all for the gift that centenarians in Fribourg, Switzerland receive:
One hundred for one hundred
One hundred bottles of wine! Now that’s enough to throw a party with! Keep your cake and flowers, because there won’t be any room left for them on the table or in the house once all those bottles are delivered. What a hoot…
Raise the roof
Centenarians from this canton can also choose to have the municipality donate a sum of money to a charity instead of receiving wine. Um; honestly, the majority chooses the wine. Recently, a woman appeared in the local news, not only because she turned one hundred, but especially because she had refused the gift. ‘It’s simply too much!’ she thought, and indeed, for no one is this an amount of wine that you could get through at a reasonably rapid pace.
But who knows, perhaps she can make the whole street happy with it! They’ll probably all come and sing birthday songs very loudly, but if that’s too much as well, perhaps the volume on a hearing aid can always be turned down. In any case, we say Proscht!
