McDonald’s not welcome on the Zuidas
I simply can’t imagine this: a place where the Mac isn’t welcome. Where people are therefore NOT waiting for the Big Mac. For the new McNuggets. The McFlurrys. I still find it a bit sacrilegious, banning the Mac. But that’s exactly what is happening at Amsterdam’s Zuidas. This ‘food trough’ (not my words) is absolutely not welcome there. The residents of the Zuidas believe that it doesn’t fit in with the allure of this chic neighbourhood.
Just to be clear: this is the same neighbourhood lovingly referred to throughout Amsterdam as the Snuifas, because of the widespread cocaine use among the employees of the offices here. What allure, huh? The owners of The Gustav building—which has commercial premises here—are in favour, by the way; they are entirely in favour of plans for a McCafé or a McDonald’s. The owners of homes in that same building… They aren’t so keen.
A Maccie for the Friday afternoon drinks
What I genuinely don’t understand is that this would be the ideal outcome for Friday afternoon drinks, right? Maybe a slightly dangerous one too. But those Friday afternoon drinks are known for going straight to the pub after work and skipping dinner, aren’t they? At least… That’s often how it goes for me. Grabbing a quick burger before heading home seems ideal to me. Not healthy, but delicious.
So is it happening or not?
I fear the arguments between the local residents and property owners will continue for some time. The building is designated for category 1 hospitality, meaning that a fast-food restaurant is welcome in principle. But local residents point to the zoning plan for this neighbourhood, where quality is highly valued. Maybe there is a middle ground? McDonald’s with table service and set tables? It would be hilarious.
