Meat-Free Week: supermarket keeps meat out of its special-offer leaflet and more meat-free news
The National Meat-Free Week—now in its fourth edition—starts today. And I think that’s a wonderful initiative. Because did you know that when you, as an adult, don’t eat meat for a week, you save 101 liters of water, the CO2 emissions from driving 79 km by car, and 770 grams of animal meat in just seven days? And to encourage everyone to eat less meat, all kinds of interesting and delicious initiatives are being launched this week.
For example, Ekoplaza is not offering any meat at a special price this week: a unique initiative for supermarkets. And all supermarkets are making it easy to try new vegetarian products by offering those at special prices instead.
50 new vegetarian products
Several producers are introducing new vegetarian products around Meat-Free Week. New products from Beyond Meat®, The Blue Butcher, Albert Heijn, Lidl, Future Farm, LikeMeat, Santa Maria, Vivera, Violife, De Vegetarische Slager, Honig, Garden Gourmet and Jumbo can now be found on the shelves. Albert Heijn has added no fewer than 50 new vegetarian products to its range.
Pop-up: De Vleesch Lobby
De Vegetarische Slager is opening the pop-up restaurant De Vleesch Lobby in collaboration with Deliveroo. From 5 to 17 March, residents of Amsterdam can order vegan burgers & loaded fries and discover that vegetarian vleesch is at least as tasty as animal meat. You can choose from the Knapperige Bofkipburger, the Ereburger and the Ereburger XXL. The loaded fries come with three different toppings: fries with Chili con Rul Gehackt, Koreaanse Kipstuckjes or Goede Karma Shoarma. Good news for vegans: all dishes at De Vleesch Lobby are vegan.
Vegetarian restaurant box from a top chef
Organizer Isabel Boerdam, also known as the Hippe Vegetariër, has joined forces with top chef Peter Lute to create a particularly delicious vegetarian restaurant box. With the special Meat-Free Week Restaurant Box, you can enjoy a top-quality menu at home, consisting of a 3- or 5-course menu (for €35 and €57.50 respectively). Peter and his team have prepared most of it, so you can easily serve it at home with the help of an instructional video (delivery throughout the Netherlands).
