Men who leave a full sink drain: stop it

Vies gootsteenputje

The act of putting a crumb-covered butter knife back in the butter dish or a pack of butter: yuck! But this is surpassed by people who leave half a meal in the sink drain. So here’s an emphatic appeal to everyone who shamelessly does this: stop it! (You know who you are).

Of course, it’s not woke at all to say this, but I’ve noticed that it’s mainly men who suffer from this condition. My own son, otherwise a sweetheart, is one of them. After 16 years, I still haven’t managed to figure out why everything gets tossed into the sink drain (oops, not woke! again) — and why I then get so worked up about it every single time.

The horror of the dirty sink drain

Quite apart from the fact that such a full sink drain is practically begging for a blocked pipe, it’s just really gross. Leftover bolognese sauce, clumps of risotto and perhaps the grossest of all: wet salad. They also have a habit of doing it here at the office — yes, I know you’re reading this: make it stop pls!

Culinary domestic violence

Now, you could say, ‘there are worse things in the world’, and you’d be absolutely right. But it’s the kind of culinary domestic violence that also includes mutilating cheese and a caked-on stovetop — things you can tolerate less on some days than on others. Usually during an autumnal depression, but when people take things too far, those annoyances still need to be aired in mid-May.

So, dear people: clear your plate, put the milk back in the fridge and drop the contents of the sink drain in the trash. Then I’ll remove that big lump of ice from the freezer this afternoon, as I’ve been promising for months. Peace!
