Smearing too much butter (with breadcrumbs) back. WHY??

boter terugsmeren

I was able to live with it for years, until last week. After opening the tub of butter and finding a horror scene yet again, I could no longer contain my annoyance. I think smearing your crumb-covered butter knife back into the butter dish or a pack of butter is downright disgusting. So I’m calling on everyone who smears butter back into the tub: stop it!

Whether it’s your colleagues, housemates, family or friends: everyone has strange eating habits. For example, there’s a colleague who prefers to fill the groove of a stalk of celery with peanut butter, and you’re crazy about dipping dellekes in syrup and eating chip sandwiches. Oh well, to each their own. And honestly, it doesn’t bother us. But when it comes to the butter tub, it’s a completely different story.

The butter-smearers

Here’s the thing: there are people who first rake a load of butter onto their knife, spread their sandwich a little too roughly, and then realize that there’s still too much butter left on the knife (well, duh), don’t know what to do with it, and simply smear it back along the edge of the tub. And preferably scrape both sides of the knife clean against the tub while they’re at it. The result: an edge covered in butter smears, including chunks of bread. And man, is that absolutely disgusting. And I’m not the only one:

Why?

The only question I have about this vile act is: WHY?! What’s wrong with first seeing how far you can get with the first civilized load of butter? And then perhaps going for a second modest round to cover the last corners of your sandwich? I don’t get it. Maybe it’s just like not removing the foil from the packaging: a case of laziness. Or is it simply ignorance? Any explanation is welcome.

No more disgusting tubs

The conclusion of this whole story is: don’t smear your butter back. Just spread a little extra next time. That means there will be far fewer disgusting butter tubs, which is much nicer for the person spreading after you. Because as FavorFlav’s Steffi said: “it takes a tiny bit more effort, but it does make the world a more beautiful place.” And that’s exactly how it is.
