Michelin will also rate hotels from 2024

michelin

Big news from Michelin: today, the tire organization announced that, starting next year, it will rate hotels alongside restaurants. They had already been working on this behind the scenes for four years, and next year the first keys will be awarded. Yes, you read that right: hotels will not be awarded stars, but Michelin Keys.

And they have already been working hard, because anonymous visitors have now visited around 5,300 hotels in 120 countries. Just a side note: surely this is everyone’s dream job?!

The Michelin criteria for hotels

According to Michelin, a hotel must meet five criteria:

1. Be a destination in its own right: the hotel must contribute to the local experience
2. Excellence in interior, design and architecture
3. Individuality and a reflection of personality and authenticity
4. Quality and consistency in service, comfort and upkeep
5. Balance between experience and price
International director Gwen Poullenac says the following about this new step: ‘The Michelin Key is a reliable indication for travelers. Just as the Michelin Star distinguishes the best restaurants, the Key recognizes the most exceptional hotels worldwide. It is a recognition of dedicated hospitality professionals.’ Incidentally, it is not yet known whether hotels, as is the case with restaurants, can receive more than one key.

From 2024, these hotels can also be booked through the Michelin website. Can we make some predictions already? Well, it seems obvious to me that De Librije‘s hotel will receive one. And in Amsterdam, I also see the Pulitzer as a strong contender. Bij Jef on Texel — I’m putting my money on that one too. In my opinion, this is a convenient, but also very smart move by Michelin.
