Why Pulitzer Garden Is One of Our Favorite Lunch Spots in the City
Hotel Pulitzer in Amsterdam is one of my favorite places in the city. In summer, I love coming here because of the Jansz. courtyard. It’s such a lovely place to spend time. But you can also sit wonderfully in Pulitzer’s other courtyard, called Pulitzer Garden.
People often ask me, ‘what is a genuinely fun and delicious place to eat in the city?’ and of course that depends on exactly what you’re looking for, who you’re with, and there are so many fun and delicious places in Amsterdam! But as a sucker for courtyards, this is definitely one of my favorite spots, whether you’re with your partner, family or friends: Pulitzer is always wonderful and delicious!
Hidden gems
Pulitzer’s courtyards are truly hidden gems in the busy city center, where you can sit and relax, the service is lovely and the food is delicious! Just like the courtyard at Jansz., Pulitzer Garden (formerly called Pause) is the kind of place you’d rather keep to yourself, but that’s not how we do things at FavorFlav, so here you go!
Special: a collection of canal houses
The Pulitzer Hotel is unique; it is made up of a collection of canal houses overlooking the Keizersgracht and the Nine Streets. Inside, it is incredibly beautiful and atmospheric, and there are also two separate courtyards. At Jansz., the garden is a little smaller and the menu somewhat more extensive than at Pulitzer Garden, which is slightly larger in terms of space. And both are delightful places. Surrounded by an oasis of greenery and classic canal houses, you can truly escape the bustle of the city center here.

The menu: small but perfectly formed
Pulitzer Garden’s menu is perfect for people who struggle to choose, because instead of an endless list of dishes, there is a limited selection of starters, main courses, side dishes and desserts. In the coming months, the menu will have an Italian focus, with iconic dishes such as Cacio e pepe, which means cheese and pepper in Roman dialect and is almost impossible not to like… Pasta Marinara is also on the menu, as are Prosciutto with melon, Caprese, Focaccia and Bruschetta.
You’ll also find classic non-Italian lunch dishes, such as Eggs Benedict and a Club Sandwich. And when you see what is being served around you, choosing is difficult—it all looks so delicious!
Bruschetta and Albariño
We start with delicious bruschetta topped with tomatoes and a wonderful glass of Spanish Albariño. Albariño, made from the grape of the same name, is the pride of many Spaniards. And rightly so! Rías Baixas, where this grape truly comes into its own, is located in rugged, soaking-wet Galicia, just north of Portugal on the Atlantic Ocean. Albariño tastes of apricot, peach and grapefruit and also has a hint of saltiness—which is why Albariños are sometimes called ‘wines of the sea.’

Juicy chicken
Next, a burger on a brioche bun (yes!), with fries, redfish with fennel and spring chicken with courgette and olives arrive at the table, along with roasted broccolini as a side dish, lightly dressed with lemon, sea salt flakes and olive oil (mmm!). The dishes are perfectly portioned (hopefully the era of excess and food waste really is behind us now!) and everything is incredibly delicious. In fact, this is the juiciest chicken we’ve eaten in a long time.
Once home, we regret not having dessert—in a moment of temporary insanity, there’s no other explanation (gelato… tiramisu, how could we not?!). But that’s all the more reason to return to this wonderful place soon!
