New in Amsterdam: Caribbean BBQ bar Boótoe

From June, Amsterdam-West will have a swinging new spot: Caribbean BBQ bar Boótoe. Think Jamaican jerk chicken, mango salads and, of course: A. Lot. Of. Rum.

“At Boótoe, almost everything you eat comes from the barbecue, such as Jamaican jerk chicken, scallops and chicken thigh satay, as well as vegetables for vegetarians,” says Unice Bergs, one of the restaurant’s three owners. “Only the side dishes, such as the mango salad, fried chicken wings and petjil (Surinamese cooked vegetable mix with peanut sauce), don’t.”
Rum nights
Say the Caribbean and you say rum. Well, Boótoe is definitely the place for that. All the cocktails there are based on rum. “We have the classic Dark & Stormy and Rum Old Fashioned, for example, but you can also opt for a Flight to the Islands. You’ll get three rum shots: one is a rum from Barbados, another from Jamaica and the third from Trinidad,” Unice explains. “Ultimately, we want to organize rum nights on Fridays and Saturdays, but we still need to work out the details.”
Jungle
The restaurant is opening at the former location of fish café De Gouden Hoek: on Van Limburg Stirumplein in Amsterdam. Don’t expect a Caribbean jungle, by the way: they’re keeping the fish café’s sleek interior, but adding a Caribbean twist with a lick of paint and some colour. The expectation is that Boótoe will hold its opening party on 6 June.
