Your new favorite spring drink: Amsterdam Tinto

amsterdam tinto

Yes! There is now a completely Amsterdam-made version of the Spanish drink tinto de verano: Amsterdam Tinto. Just in time for summer. Traditional tinto de verano is a mix of red wine, soft drink/soda and ice; that’s why the Spaniards drink this wine cocktail like lemonade. But what’s in the Amsterdam version?

The Amsterdam Tinto consists of a combination of German red wine, sparkling water and a lemon and grapefruit syrup. The drink has an alcohol content of 4.9% and costs 7.-.

Much less sweet

Wait a minute: German wine for a Spanish-inspired drink? Why? The answer from the makers is precisely to stand out: ‘The German wine is lighter and more floral, meaning we don’t have to add as much sugar as the Spaniards do, while the drink still goes down nice and easily.’

When the makers tasted the Spanish drink four years ago, they thought it was a good combination, but far too sweet. That’s why they opt for a mix of sparkling water and lemon and grapefruit syrup instead of the traditional soft drink, giving the drink a lightly bitter wine flavor.

Where to get it

Curious about Amsterdam Tinto? At the moment, you’ll find the drink mainly in – you guessed it – Amsterdam, at various hospitality venues, such as Café van Leeuwen on the Keizersgracht, or you can buy it at delicatessens and specialty shops. The makers’ goal is ultimately to offer the drink at more venues throughout the Netherlands. You can find all points of sale on the website.
