Xuixo: the Spanish cronut

The xuixo is a mix of a croissant and a sugar-coated donut, filled with pastry cream. We wonder when this divine treat will also become available in the Netherlands. Do you know where? Let us know—we’re ready and waiting.

The xuixo (pronounced: suso) originally comes from Girona in Catalonia, Spain. It looks like a deep-fried croissant filled with pastry cream and covered in a layer of granulated sugar. What. A. Combination. In Spain, they eat this sugar-coated treat, which closely resembles the cronut, with coffee or for breakfast. Luckily, you can get a xuixo at a bakery or café at any time of day. And not only in Girona: the Catalan snack is also available in Valencia, Tarragona and Castellón de la Plana.
According to Spanish-American star chef Jose Andrés, Gwyneth Paltrow is also crazy about xuixos. He will soon open a Spanish food paradise in New York, where the Spanish specialty will also be sold: ”There will be xuixos, Spanish pastries that Gwyneth Paltrow loves, and has delivered to her hotel room, which is saying something, because xuixos are fried, cream-stuffed croissants rolled in sugar and Gwyneth Paltrow is herself”, Andres says. Our mouths are watering, but for now we’ll make do with this recipe for cronuts!
