New Three Stars in the Netherlands: Jannis Brevet
Zeeland chef Jannis Brevet (Inter Scaldes) is the third chef in the Netherlands to be awarded three stars by Michelin.
Patience pays off, as was shown at this year’s Michelin-star ceremony. Inter Scaldes has held one star since 1978, and a second followed in 1984. Brevet took over the restaurant sixteen years ago, and now he can finally reap the rewards.
Kruiningen
With this achievement, Inter Scaldes joins an exclusive group of international three-star restaurants. Michelin is still regarded by many chefs as the highest attainable honor. Three stars means that a restaurant can also break through internationally. The small village of Kruiningen in Zeeland has instantly become a gastronomic destination for an international dining audience.
Newcomers
There was also cause for celebration for five newcomers who received a star. In Amsterdam, these were The Duchess, Le Restaurant (which lost a star last year because of a relocation but has already regained it) and The White Room, the restaurant at Krasnapolsky where Arturo Dalhuise, a pupil of three-star chef Jacob Jan Boerma (No. 16 in the FavorFlav Food Top 100), is head chef. Sergio Hermans’ Air Republic in Cadzand, which opened last year (chef Alex Buiten), also received a first star, as did restaurant Vista (Willemstad) and Rotterdam’s Fitzgerald.
Stars Lost
There was bad news for restaurants Bord’de Eau and Da Vinci, which each had to surrender one of their two stars. In the one-star category, Han Ting (The Hague), De Bokkepruik (Hardenberg-Heemse), O Mundo (Wageningen) and Wereldmuseum (due to the closure of the business) lost their star.
108 Michelin-Starred Restaurants
Following this latest awards round, the Netherlands has 108 Michelin-starred restaurants: three restaurants with three stars (De Leest and De Librije retained their three stars); sixteen with two stars (no new two-star establishments were added) and 89 restaurants with one star. Last year, the total stood at 106 Michelin-starred restaurants. With the arrival of a new three-star establishment and five promising new Michelin-starred restaurants, dining at star level in the Netherlands has once again risen a notch.
